Inaugural Rainbow Games Celebrates Success and Inclusivity

The debut of the Rainbow Games has been hailed as a resounding triumph by event organizers, drawing 75 enthusiastic Rangatahi from 8 schools spanning Auckland and the Bay of Plenty region. This groundbreaking event, conceived by local Rangatahi themselves, unfolded with a spirit of collaboration and empowerment, as participants played an integral role in shaping the day's activities and schedule alongside the Rainbow Games team.

Taking place at the Trusts Stadium, students were treated to a diverse array of engaging pursuits, including Multi-Sport, Indoor Bowls, E-Sports, Zumba, Fencing, and an electrifying Drag race hosted by the beloved Anita Wigl'it. The E-Sports segment, featuring the cutting-edge HADO augmented reality (AR) experience and a plethora of gaming consoles, proved to be a highlight, captivating participants of all ages.

Reflecting on the event's impact, Sally from Bowls NZ highlighted the remarkable level of engagement among the Rangatahi, particularly noting the newfound confidence exhibited by students who may have previously hesitated to participate in school based opportunities. The Rainbow Games provided a nurturing and inclusive environment, fostering a sense of belonging and empowerment for all involved.

The collective spirit soared during the lively Zumba session, culminating in a spirited dance-off between rival teams that filled the stadium with infectious joy and laughter. As the day drew to a close, eager students eagerly inquired about future editions of the event, while teachers praised its inclusive and joyful atmosphere.

The smiles on the faces of the Rangatahi throughout the day underscored the significance of such inclusive initiatives. Buoyed by the overwhelming success of the inaugural event, plans are already underway in collaboration with the Rainbow Games team for the eagerly anticipated 2025 Rangatahi Rainbow Games. Together, we celebrate not only the achievements of today but also the promise of a brighter, more inclusive future for all.

Thank you to all of the Rangatahi, staff, event providers and volunteers who made this day such a success!
