The School Sport New Zealand Calendar has over 250 events throughout the school year, offering a wide variety of sporting opportunities across the motu. While many events take place during designated tournament weeks, numerous others are scheduled for weekends and school holidays.
The year kicks off next weekend with the iconic NZSS Kathmandu Coast to Coast and the NZSS Beach Volleyball Tournament at Mount Maunganui.
Beach Volleyball Events Manager Brooke Pryor is thrilled with the entries “We have 164 teams from all over New Zealand entered making this the largest beach volleyball event for the year”, she said.
“I am excited to see players from all over the country ranging from seasoned pros to complete beginners play at such an iconic location. This secondary school competition is such a great opportunity for students to compete in different sports with other students they normally would not interact with”
Later in February, Christchurch will be buzzing with activity, hosting the NZSS Tennis Championship and Cup on February 22 and 23 at Wilding Park. The following weekend, the SISS Volleyball Championships will also be held in the garden city. Shortly after, on March 2, the SISS Triathlon and Duathlon will take place in the picturesque town of Ōamaru, providing an ideal build-up for the NZSS Triathlon set to be staged on the beautiful shores of Lake Wānaka on March 27. Both events offer opportunities for individual and team racing.
The rowing season is in full swing, with the North Island and South Island Rowing regattas being held at Lakes Karāpiro and Ruataniwha, respectively, from March 7 to 9. These events lead into to rowing’s pinnacle event, the Maadi Cup, which will be hosted at Lake Karāpiro during Summer Tournament Week (March 24-28).
